John A. Dix Civil War Passand Letter 1862, 1869

John A. Dix (soldier,attorney, and politician) was commissioned Major General by President Lincolnin 1861 and served in administrative positions during the Civil War, issuingthe military pass in this collection during that time; after the war he becameminister to France (1866-69), then returned to New York State to resume hisprofessional and business activities. In his letter of December 1, 1869,written to “My dear Colonel,” he discusses a recent land purchase andinvestment opportunity, and urges his friend to visit him soon.

Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
