In 1923, North Carolina State College's (later North Carolina State University) Department of Physical Education was established upon authorization of the Board of Trustees. Ten department heads have led the program since its inception. In 2012, the department changed its name to the Department of Health and Exercise Studies. Health and Exercise Studies currently works closely with the Departments of Campus Recreation and Carmichael Complex Facilities and Operations.
