John H. Winder Papers, . 1828-1889

John H. Winder (1800-1865) of Maryland was a Confederate brigadier general and provost marshal general in Virginia. The collection includes scattered letters, orders, and other military papers of Winder while he was a United States army officer, including some from the period of his military governorship of Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1848; and scattered Civil War items, including papers about a suspected spy.
