J. Alex McMillan (1932- ), congressman and businessman of Charlotte, N.C. McMillan, a Republican, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representative in 1984 from North Carolina's Ninth District and held four successive terms until 1994. He was also elected to several offices in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.McMillan worked for Ruddick Corporation and Harris-Teeter Super Markets, Inc., in Charlotte, 1969-1983, in several management positions. He also served vice chair and chair of the First Union National Bank board of directors, 1980-1984; on the board of the Southeastern Savings & Loan Co., 1979-1984; and as director of the Greater Charlotte Economic Development Council, 1981-1982. Congressional committee records, correspondence, speeches, campaign financial and administrative records, voter surveys, photographs, audio tapes, and videocassettes of J. Alex McMillan. Records document his work on House committees, including Small Business; Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs; Joint Economic; Energy and Commerce; and Budget. Also included are records relating to his service on the Leadership for Health Care Reform Task Force and President's Commission for Entitlement Reform,and his work as a delegate to the North Atlantic Assembly (NATO) and as vice chair of the Economic Committee and Sub-Committee on East-West Economic Cooperation. Other files document McMillan's political activity in connection with the Republican National Committee and the North Carolina Republican Party. Files for all of McMillan's campaigns are included, most containing information on opponents, campaign issues, McMillan's positions on these issues, and his campaign tactics.

J. Alex McMillan III was born in Charlotte, N.C. and attended a private boarding school in Virginia. He later went to college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia. After serving in the U.S. Army in the 1950s he returned to Charlotte and worked as a businessman. In the mid 1970s he was elected to serve on the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners.
