Born in Iowa in 1997, Pence's YMCA career covered a period of more than 40 years. He began in student work at Robert College in Constantinople, Turkey and in Illinois. Other positions included war service in France and with the National War Work Council, and 23 years on the staff of the National Council. The YMCA, established at Oberlin College in 1881, and the YWCA, established in 1894, were voluntary associations of students dedicated to social and religious work for the purpose of building Christian character in their members.
