G. Robert "Bob" Mowerson was born on 17 November 1913 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1937 and master's degree in 1945 from the University of Michigan. Mowerson was a high school coach and physical education instructor in Battle Creek, Michigan for 18 years. He then went on to coach the swim team, and teach physical education, at Michigan State University (1957-1962).
