Irene G. Ramey was born in Shiner, Texas on March 2, 1921. She earned her diploma in nursing from the Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing (Houston, TX) in 1942. She went on to earn her B.S.N. and M.A. in 1958 from Columbia University and her Ph.D. in 1968 from New York University. On October 1, 1908, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents authorized the establishment of a nursing program as part of the University's curriculum.
