On Adm. Byrd's Antarctic expedition, 1928-1930. Reel 1, the liner Leviathan escorts the bark City of New York from New York harbor. Shows deck scenes aboard the bark and the supply ship Eleanor Bolling as icebergs are encountered. Reel 2, the City of New York sails through pack ice. Shows panoramic shots of Ross Barrier Ice. Adm. Byrd examines ice crevasses. Penguins greet the party. Supplies are unloaded from the bark. Dog sleds cross the ice. A Ford airplane (the Floyd Bennett) is lowered to the ice. Reel 3, two huts are built deep into the snow and a connecting tunnel dug. A blizzard strikes the camp. The City of New York sails for New Zealand. Whales and seals play off shore and on the ice. A Fokker plane is fueled, taxis, and flies. Reel 4, the Fokker is battered in a blizzard and the exploring party stranded. The blizzard sweeps over the camp at Little America. Radio contact is maintained with the stranded party. A Fairchild plane is warmed up and flies to the party's rescue. Shows sled dogs and provision storehouses at Little America. A snow-block wall is constructed around the Floyd Bennett. Reel 5, sleds are built. Men with torches explore the barrier ice. Men read wireless messages from home. Byrd and others map the polar flight. The party digs out as Spring arrives. Shows husky pups. Reel 6, dog teams pull sleds across crevasses. Food caches are made along the polar route to the Queen Maude Mountains. The Floyd Bennett is readied. The dog sled party finds a cairn left by Amundsen 17 years before. Reel 7, a blizzard rushes over Little America. The Floyd Bennett takes off for the Pole. Shows many aerial views. Reel 8, Byrd, in the Floyd Bennett, radios that the Pole has been reached. Shows many aerial views. The Floyd Bennett lands at Little America. The City of New York anchors off the barrier ice and the party boards her.

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics.
