Gerald Rudolph Ford, the 38th President of the United States, was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr., the son of Leslie Lynch King and Dorothy Ayer Gardner King, on July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Nebraska. His parents separated two weeks after his birth, and his mother took him to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to live with her parents. Gordon E. Vander Till (b. 1938) was an intern in Gerald Ford's Washington Congressional office in 1965. He received a B.A. in political science from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1966. From 1969 to 1974, he was Director of Gerald Ford's Grand Rapids office, and about 1975 he began working for the Federal Energy Administration.
