These mixed albumen and cyanotype prints were taken during Peary's first Arctic journey, often referred to as the Greenland "reconnaissance." The photographs' subjects include Peary (XP-XPA-1886-1), Maigaard (XP-XPA-1886-8), St. Johns Newfoundland (XP-XPA-1886-15A), the S.S. Eagle (XP-XPA-1886-16), Disco Bay (XP-XPA-1886-10A), and the inland expedition itself (XP-XPA-1886-14). The photograph of Maigaard (XP-XPA- 1886-8) is a partial fragment of an albumen portrait.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
