This series consists of records relating to Robert E. Peary congressional retirement bills. Included are materials pertaining to the bill authorizing Peary's retirement from the Navy at the rank of rear admiral. There are also documents relating to the resolution that questions Peary's attainment of the North Pole and proposal to revoke his retirement as rear admiral. Included are congressional hearings, reports, speeches and joint resolutions. There are also papers prepared by Peary in response to the resolution such as reports and draft exhibit material, copies of affidavits and other statements relating to North Pole expeditions. Located in the series are also documents pertaining to the Frederick Cook - Robert E. Peary controversy, such as notes, letters, reports, articles and newspaper clippings.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
