Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was the 33rd president of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953, succeeding upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt after serving as the 34th vice president in early 1945. He implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established the Truman Doctrine and NATO to contain communist expansion. Bucklew, L. L. (Leslie L.), 1880-1982

Leslie LeRoy Bucklew was born on March 31, 1880 in Terre Haute, Indiana. His family moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1882. He attended Iowa State College from 1897 to 1898, but left school to enter the service. He served in the Spanish-American War, in the Philippines, and in World War I. In World War I, he served in Battery E, 128th U.S. Field Artillery, 35th Division. As captain of this division, he became friends with Harry S. Truman and Harry Vaughan.
