George Catlett Marshall (b. December 31, 1880, Uniontown, Pennsylvania-d. October 16, 1959, Washington, D.C.), had a long and auspicious career in the United States (U.S.) Army and to the United States. Benjamin Sumner Welles (1892-1961) graduated from Harvard University in 1914 and began his diplomatic career in 1915 as Secretary of the United States Embassy in Tokyo. From 1917 to 1919 he served in a similar post in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
