The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president. On May 25, 1935, 21 women chartered the Alpha Sigma chapter of the Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) music honorary society at the University of New Mexico. SAI is a national music fraternity for women. On January 10, 1939, the Albuquerque Alumnae chapter of SAI was founded and the groups bylaws adopted.
