Philander Van Burington Collection 1890-1926

This collection consists of 366 glass plate negatives, 17 lantern slides, a postcard, a poem book, 208 35mm slides and 11 photographs. The collection has been divided into four series. The glass plate negatives found in Series I and II were created by Philander Van Burington, ca. 1899 – 1926. The plates depict Burington family members and friends, the family’s home on Rich Street in Columbus, Ohio, family travels, nature scenes and landmarks in the Columbus, Ohio area. Series III includes glass plate negatives related to Ohio State University, an engineering class, William Howard Taft’s visiting Columbus and a pamphlet of poetry. The 35mm slides in Series IV are duplicate images of the glass plate negatives. They were made in 1997. Also found in Series IV are 11 modern photographs made from the glass plate negatives that depict Philander Van and Viola Burington, the interior and exterior of their Rich Street home in Columbus and an exterior view of the Ohio State School for the Blind.

Philander Van Burington was born in West Springfield, Pennsylvania on January 14th, 1847. When Philander was nine years old, his parents, Rensalear S. V. Burington and Lucy (Pike) Burington moved the family west to a farm in Illinois, where they resided for four years. Rensalear S. V.
