Paul Gerhart Hatfield was born April 29, 1928 in Great Falls, Montana. He graduated from Great Falls High School in 1947 and attended the College of Great Falls for pre-law training until 1950. In 1951, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Signal Corps in Korea from 1952 to 1953. He attended the University of Montana--Missoula's Law School, and graduated in 1955.
