In 1935 Dale Lynn Johnson was born to Arthur A. and Ruth G. Johnson in St. Maries, Idaho. He attended high school in Billings, Montana, and received a B.A. in Accounting, an M.A. in History and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Montana-Missoula. From 1965 to 1996 Johnson served as the archivist at The University of Montana in Missoula. Johnson married Coburn R. Randak and they have two children, Reed and Evan.
