Peder Garberg was born on December 8, 1898 in Selbu, Norway to Ingebrikt and Kari Garberg. He was one of four children. Peder worked on the family farm until he left for America in 1917 with two neighboring boys. During his trip to America aboard the Bergensfjord, Peder witnessed a burial at sea. The first meeting leading to the organization of Selbu Lutheran was held at the Peter J. Wigan home on May 2, 1902. The congregation organized in January of 1903, worshipping in the old school house on Mud Flat until the first church was completed in 1905. The name “Selbu” was chosen because most of its members were originally from the Selbu district near Trondheim, Norway.
