Horticulturist Melvin Westwood was a faculty member in the Oregon State University Horticulture Department and Agricultural Experiment Station from 1960 until his retirement in 1983. The Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station was established under the provisions of the federal Hatch Act of 1887. Agricultural experimentation began at Oregon Agricultural College in 1888.
