The Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) of the University of Rhode Island began as the Narragansett Marine Lab in Narragansett, R.I. in 1936. In 1960 it was renamed the Fish Oceanographic Lab after its founder Charles Fish. The GSO was established in 1961 and ten years later, under the direction of Dean John A.
