The Brown University Registrar's accounts consist of one series. The collection includes Steward accounts from 1826 to 1838; accounts of Lemuel H. Elliott, registrar, from 1858/1859 to 1861/1862 (arranged chronologically); Registrar financial accounts (1844-1864) and reports (1864-1882). The collection also contains "Charitable Account" and account of "Beneficiaries," from 1836 to 1843.

The Registrar of the University dates back to 1828 when the office of "Register" was created and assumed by Lemuel H. Elliott, who had already been steward since 1826. Elliott kept this job until 1864, and was succeeded in the position by William Douglas 1839 from 1864 to 1879, Francis W. Douglas 1868 from 1879 to 1884, Gilman P. Robinson 1878 from 1884 to 1889, John C. Stockbridge 1838 from 1889 to 1891, and Frederick T. Guild 1890 from 1891 to 1938. There was no registrar for seve...

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
