John Dewey was born on October 20, 1859 in Burlington, Vermont and graduated in 1879 from The University of Vermont. Educator and author, born in Italy in Salerno. Patri came to the U.S. in the 1880s. He was the first Italian American principal of a New York City Public School. He wrote a syndicated newspaper column on the education of children and seven books for educators and parents and several books for children, including a translation of Pinocchio.
