Louise Bryant was born on December 5, 1885, in San Francisco, California. After graduating from the University of Oregon in 1909, she began her career in journalism as an illustrator, and later the society editor, for the Spectator newspaper in Portland, Oregon. In 1916, Bryant moved to New York City and married the journalist John Reed.
