Harold Saxton Burr was born on April 18, 1889, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He graduated from Sheffield Scientific School in 1911 and received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1915. On December 27, 1911, in Chicago, he married Jean Chandler, with whom he had a son. Between 1914 and 1958, he was a teacher at Yale, working his way from instructor to the E.K.
