Jane Freilicher was an American painter. Born in 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, she attended Brooklyn College and then studied with artist Hans Hofmann. She left the Hofmann studio in 1948 to paint in New York City, collaborating with a group of artist and writer friends known collectively as the New York School and including John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, Larry Rivers, and James Schuyler.
