Merchant Seamen's Club records 1943-1945

Established by the American Theatre Wing during World War II as part of their Stage Door Canteen program, the Merchant Seamen's Club provided services, food, and entertainment to merchant marines passing through the Port of New York. Most significant in the collection are the registers containing miniature facsimiles of sketches and caricatures of merchant seamen which were sent free of charge to the mens' families or friends. The registers also include letters of gratitude from the recipients of the portraits. Also included are visitor's books, scrapbooks, letters, and clippings
