Emma Jane Catherine Cobden was born in 1851, the daughter of Richard Cobden, MP. She was elected to the London County Council in 1889, and strove throughout her life for recognition of the rights of minorities and liberty for all, tackling such controversial issues as Irish Independence, the rights of indigenous peoples in South Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia, and womens' suffrage.
