Eric Heffer, writer and politician, carpenter by trade, began political life as a communist in Welwyn Garden City. On expulsion from the Communist Party he moved to Liverpool where he became the Labour MP for Liverpool Walton between 1964-1991. He served as Industry Minister in Harold Wilson's Government, 1974-5.
