Professor William Smart, was born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1853 . He received his MA from the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1882 . According to matriculation records, he studied moral philosophy and mathematics in 1880-1881, and in 1881-1882, he studied natural philosophy. It appears he received his LLD in 1893 and his DPhil in 1896 . He lectured at the University of Glasgow at this time, so it would appear that he obtained his qualifications there.
