R. Silyn Roberts, Calvinistic Methodist minister, poet and social reformer was born in 1871 in Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire. He worked as a quarryman before attending the University College of North Wales and the Bala Theological College. David Thomas, 1880-1967, was born in the parish of Llanfechain, Montgomeryshire. He gained an M.A. degree at the University of Liverpool in 1928. A historian, he taught at several schools in Caernarfonshire and published many books, including, Y Werin a'i theyrnas (1910), Hen Longau a Llongwyr Cymru (1949) and Silyn (1956).
