William Speirs Bruce was born in London of Scottish parents in 1867. He was educated at Norfolk County School, England and enrolled as a medical student at the University of Edinburgh, where renowned Scottish physicists, chemists and oceanographers supervised him. John Alexander Harvie-Brown was born in Scotland in 1844. He was educated at Merchiston Castle and the universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge. An ornithologist, he devoted much time to the study of bird migration, serving as a member of the British Association Committee on this subject. Harvie-Brown was also interested in the dispersal and geographical distribution of species, making study visits to northern Norway in 1871, the White Sea in 1872 and the Pechora Valley in 1875.
