John Hartnell served as Able Seaman on the British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848 (leader Sir John Franklin). Sailing in HMS Erebus Hartnell died on 4 January 1846 and was buried on Beechey Island. His grave was discovered in 1850 during a search for the missing expedition.
