Sir George Augustus William Shuckburgh-Evelyn (1751-1804), 6th Baronet and mathematician, was born on 23 August 1751. He was educated at Rugby from 1760, and entered Balliol College, Oxford, in 1768 (B.A., 1772). Shuckburgh-Evelyn carried out investigations into the measurement of length, capacity and weight, and published Observations made in Savoy to ascertain the height of mountains by the barometer (London, 1777).
