Luis Vlez de Guevara (1579-1644), playwright and novelist, was born at Ecija, Spain, in July 1579. After attending the University of Osuna, he joined the household of Cardinal Rodrigo de Castro, Archbishop of Seville. He saw military service in Italy before serving successively the Counts of Saldana and of Penafiel. De Guevera was a follower of Lope de Vega.
