James Speare (1774-1850) was born in London, the son of James Speare. He attended St Paul's School, London, before matriculating at Clare College, Cambridge, in 1793 (B.A., 1797; M.A., 1800), where he became a fellow in 1799. He was ordained deacon in 1799, and was curate of Sawston, Cambridgeshire, 1808-1816; rector of Rotherhithe, Surrey, 1816-1817; and rector of Elmsett, Suffolk, 1817-1850. He died on 22 May 1850.
