The collection comprises a photographic self-portrait of Louis Vignes at age 28, when he held the rank of ship's ensign, and portraits of four fellow officers including Mr. Vaillant, another ship's ensign; Corporal Juin, later president of the Société de Géographie de Rochefort (1883-1892); Mr. Ichenne, a ship's lieutenant, who was wounded at Sevastopol; and Baptiste Bourdon, who died while in the service of the shipping line Messageries maritimes. The Vaillant and Ichenne portraits are environmental portraits with each officer shown amid the rigging on a ship's deck, while the Juin and Bourdon portraits are vignetted images made in a more conventional studio portrait style.

Louis Vignes (1831-1896) was a French naval officer who, in 1864 as a young lieutenant, accompanied Honoré Paul Joseph d'Albert, duc de Luynes, on his expedition to the Dead Sea region, having been trained as a photographer by Charles Negre prior to their departure. The expedition included Vignes, geologist Louis Lartet, naturalist Dr. Combe, and the duke himself, who accompanied the expedition as far as Petra.
