The collection consists of three boxes, and contains various discographies of Duke Ellington (including four copies of Askey's own work), ten years of the Duke Ellington Music Society Bulletin, materials from record clubs, VHS and Beta tapes, CDs, and film reels. The film reels include content related to jazz, and to Askey's work as a foreign service officer, with content from China and Afghanistan.

Duke Ellington (b. Edward Kennedy Ellington, April 29, 1899, Washington, DC–d. May 24, 1974, New York, NY) was a composer, pianist, and jazz orchestra leader. He began piano lessons at 7 and wrote his first composition, "Soda Fountain Rag", in 1914. Ellington became a more serious piano student as a teenager after hearing poolroom pianists in Washington, DC. Dennis Ulysses Askey was born on May 13, 1919 in Gonzales, Texas. He graduated as valedictorian from I.M. Terrell High School in Fort Worth in 1935, and graduated from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas in 1939. He relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1940, and served in the U.S. Army in the Second World War, landing at Normandy Beach two days after D-Day in 1944.
