Elaine Brown, author of "A Taste of Power: A Black Woman's Story," and a former Black Panther leader, discusses her book and experiences as a Black Panther. She explains how the Panthers differ from other groups, and the need to educate young Black men away from rape and abuse in their gender relations. Ms. Brown continues by discussing her experiences as a Panther and what it was like to write the book as a woman, including support from the entertainment industry. She disclaims the Panther's gangster image, and hopes for the book becoming a film. She concludes about life in Los Angeles, and the causes and impact of the April, 1992 uprising.

Elaine Brown was born in North Philadelphia and raised by her mother. Although she grew up in a single-parent home and experienced economic hardship, Elaine had the opportunity to attend a private school where she participated in extracurricular activities such as classical piano and ballet. She was noted to have had many white friends because of this. After high school, Brown briefly attended Temple University before withdrawing to pursue a music career in Los Angeles.
