This series consists of reports, photographs, records of scientific data, manuals, correspondence and other records relating to the activities of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd during and after the Second World War. The first subseries consists of reports and photographs relating to Admiral Byrd's South Pacific advanced base inspection trip in May-June 1942. The second subseries consists of reports, photographs and other records relating to Byrd's special mission to investigate various Pacific islands for use as military and commercial aviation facilities during September-December 1943. This subseries also includes proceedings of the investigation into the explosion and fire aboard Byrd's command ship, the USS Concord, in October 1943. The third subseries consists of reports and correspondence relating to Byrd's participation in the United States Strategic Bombing Survey (USSBS) in 1944-1945. The fourth subseries consists of materials largely duplicated in the previous three subseries, with some additional photographs.

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics.
