This series consists of selected case files from the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Judicial District of Maryland. The cases documented in these files were considered to be either historically significant or important factors in setting legal precedents. They refer primarily to governmental investigations of criminal and civil violations of various Federal statutes that occurred within the Judicial District of Maryland. The files contain numerous records that were used in the course of legal proceedings against the various defendants. These include legal correspondence, memorandums, photographs, depositions, subpoenas, financial records, criminal court records, evidence, and exhibits. Some case files contain reports compiled by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and transcripts of grand jury testimony. Among the case files is that relating to the 1973 investigation of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew on charges of extortion, tax fraud, bribery, and conspiracy.

Spiro Theodore Agnew (November 9, 1918 – September 17, 1996) was the 39th vice president of the United States from 1969 until his resignation in 1973. He is the second and most recent vice president to resign the position, the other being John C. Calhoun in 1832. Unlike Calhoun, Agnew resigned as a result of a scandal.
