Jesse Peel was born and raised in Everretts, North Carolina and attended undergraduate and medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill. He completed his psychiatric training in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the Navy in the Vietnam War before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt University. After five years he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and began working as a psychiatrist.
