The Civil War Papers of Samuel E. Pittman, Lt. Col., contain letters, reports, and other material documenting military strategy and several key battles of the American Civil War, circa 1862 to 1865. Many items concern Pittman's role as aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Alpheus S. Williams, commander of the 12 Corps, during the war. The papers include a substantial body of material concerning "Lee's Lost Order," a copy of Confederate Special Order #191 which was discovered by Union troops before the battle of Antietam. Also included are letters describing the battles of Antietam and Chancellorsville; field drafts of battle reports, including a detailed report on the battle of Gettysburg; handwritten reports on the movements of the 12th Corps; Col. E. A. Carman's field report of the Battle of Kolb's Farm; action near Peach Creak, outside of Atlanta; and field reports of General William Tecumseh Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. The papers are accompanied by Pittman's dress epaulettes, preserved in their original satin-lined metal carrying case.
