Howland Wood (1877-1938) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Brown University in 1900. He became a member of the ANS in 1909. By 1913 he had been appointed Curator, remaining in this position until his death in 1938. At that time, the Society only maintained a single curator, with two assistants. William P. Wallace, a professor of classics at the University of Toronto, joined the American Numismatic Society in 1938, becoming a fellow in 1950. He was the author of The Euboian League and its Coinage, published by the ANS in 1956 (Numismatic Notes and Monographs 134). The Society acquired almost 200 of his coins, mostly from Euboean mints, in 1978.
