Sherwood Project Papers of Assistant Director William Brobeck, 1953-1957, 1953 - 1957

This series documents the administration and progress of the Sherwood Steering Committee's program on controlled thermonuclear reactions. The program's goal was controlled release of energy from the fusion of light nuclei, with peacetime applications. The records consist of summary minutes of meetings, letters and agendas documenting meetings and research progress, interim research reports, typed and handwritten notes, and abstracts. The records were maintained by William Brobeck, Assistant Director of the Radiation Laboratory and a member of the Sherwood Committee. Other members included Thomas H. Johnson (Atomic Energy Commission), Edward Teller (University of California Radiation Laboratory), James Tuck (University of California at Los Alamos), Lyman Spitzer, Jr. (Princeton), and A.S. Bishop (Atomic Energy Commission).

Lyman Spitzer (b. June 26, 1914, Toldedo, OH-d. March 31, 1997, Princeton, NJ) was an American theoretical physicist, astronomer, and mountaineer. As a scientist, he carried out research into star formation, plasma physics, and in 1946, conceived the idea of telescopes operating in outer space. Spitzer invented the stellarator plasma device and is the namesake of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.
