Letters to H.H. Boyesen and Rufus W. Griswold, II, 1851-1890.

In a letter, 1851 November 21, Jay asks Griswold if he is planning on contributing an article on American Literature to the "Westminster." Mentions Horace Greeley and John Chapman. Letters to H.H. Boyesen, 1880 January 30, 1889 October 1, 1889 October 30, and n.d. are mainly concerned with the National League for the Protection of American Institutions (an organization founded that year "to secure constitutional and legislative safeguards" against the Catholic Church.) Jay tries to persuade Boyesen to become one of twelve proposed New York magagers on which Boyesen would represent "loyal and devoted citizens of foreign birth"; asks him to work on a draft letter to the President and to write a letter "expressing ... approval of the amendments ." He also invites Boyesen to lunch to meet George W. Smalley.
