Of particular interest is his 1 Aug. 1852 letter to Lucy G. Speed discussing the appearance, dress, and manner of northern men and women, and his 10 Jan. 1863 letter stating his views on slavery and the reasons it is so hard to make progress towards emancipation.

James Taylor, the son of Col. James Taylor, was born on Apr. 19, 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was educated at Rappahannock Academy. In 1788 Taylor was commissioned as surveyor of Caroline County and was made deputy sheriff. He moved to Kentucky in 1792 and settled on the forks between the Licking and Ohio Rivers, founding the town of Newport. He made a fortune in Kentucky land transactions. James Speed was a friend and advisor to Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln appointed him attorney general in 1864 and he supported Lincoln's moderate treatment of the southern states until Lincoln's death.
