Regrets that she can't come and visit because she is ill. She invites them to come to a meeting, would regret if she couldn't see them befor she returns to the West. Says, that she quoted "The Man With the Hoe" so many times, that she feels she must meet it's author.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
