Odyssey of a manuscript : Marshall, Tex., photocopied typescript, [after 1932].

Early version (18 p.) of an essay, written while Tolson was teaching at Wiley College in Marshall, Tex. (1924-1947), and first published in 1965 as Harlem Gallery. Concerns the rejection of his book of poems, A Gallery of Harlem Portraits (eventually published in 1979). Tolson describes his childhood and development as a poet and scholar, and enumerates those who failed to help him get his poem published. Following the essay are 15 poems or fragments of poems, found among the opening poems of Chiaroscuro, the first section of his book.
