Wayne County General Hospital operated from 1839 to 1981, and served as a psychiatric hospital that housed poor and sick people as well as the mentally ill. Known more commonly by the name of the nearby post office, Eloise Hospital was self-sufficient, and by the 1930s contained a dairy farm, its own fire department and over 7,000 people.
