Records of a committee organized to plan and finance a memorial monument to the German poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. Organizational and financial records, correspondence of committee president Ferdinand Willius, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, and sketches and photographs detail their search for a sculptor, the shipment of German sculptor Ignatius Taschner's bronze statue to the United States, and the July, 1907, unveiling ceremony in St. Paul's Como Park. Correspondents include American architect Cass Gilbert, American sculptors Karl T. F. Bitter, Albert Jaegers, Johannes Gelert, and Henry H. Kitson, German architect Emil Högg, American artist Carl Marr, Minneapolis School of Fine Arts director Robert Koehler, and German political economist and journalist Theodore Barth. Robert Koehler was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1850 and settled with his family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1854. He learned the trade of lithography which he practiced in Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and New York City. Born in a suburb of Vienna, Austria, Karl Bitter was trained as a sculptor at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, from 1885 to 1888. After active service in the Army, Bitter immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City in November of 1889. Marr was a well known painter in Munich where he held a chair at the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Kunste) from 1893 on, and later became its Director. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1858, and died in Munich, Germany, 1936.
